A weekly report on 41ST GENERAL COUNCIL happenings
The
theme of this General Council is based on Micah 6:8: “[A]nd what
does the Lord require of you but to [seek] justice, and to love
kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Theme
The
theme will be an integrative thread throughout Council. Micah 6:8 is
foundational to our identity as a church, a guide to what work we do
and how we work with one another.
We
stand at a significant point in our history, so this meeting will
focus on the task of uncovering our identity as The United Church of
Canada: who God
is calling us to be in this time, and how we
can best build strong connections to one another through our large
and diverse community.
To
paraphrase Micah’s words: What does the Lord require? It’s quite
simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbour, be compassionate
and loyal in your love, and don’t take yourself too seriously—take
God seriously.
Logo
The
logo is made up of three spiralling brush strokes coming together at
the centre. Energy and transition are conveyed as the shapes rotate
both outward and inward toward the centre, where they overlap and
blend.
The
colours reflect the sacred colours and directions of Aboriginal
tradition: red the South, yellow the East, black the West, and white
the North.
The
three brush strokes also represent the Trinity, with the centre
forming the shape of the fish, the symbol for Jesus Christ and the
shape of our United Church crest.
