REFLECT

Anyone who wishes to process with palm branches pick up palms from beside the “river” and gather in church hall.
The Gospel Acclamation (from the entrance to the church)

Choral Reading of Scripture: Mark 11:1-11
A: When they were approaching Jerusalem,
B: at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mt of Olives,
A: Jesus sent two of his disciples into the village
B: to find a colt that had never been ridden,
A: with the strange instruction that if anyone were to ask what they were doing
B: they were just to say, “The Lord needs it.”
A: So they went
B: and found the colt
A: and while they were untying it a bystander asked,
B: “What are doing, untying the colt?”
A: and they told them what Jesus said
B: and they were allowed to take it to Jesus.
A: They threw their cloaks on the colt’s back and Jesus sat on it
B: even though he knew that the colt had never been ridden before.
A: So he rode into Jerusalem,
B: and some people spread their cloaks on the ground
A: while others spread leafy branches in front of him
B: and they made a royal pathway.
A: The people were shouting, “Hosanna!”
B: ...a word that implied they needed saving
A: “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God the Ruler of Israel”
B: as if Jesus was the one who would be their salvation.
A: “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David”
B: as if he were their king.

*Processional Hymn     Hosanna, Loud Hosanna      VU 123

A: He entered Jerusalem and went into the temple, looking all around.
B: Why?
A: We don’t know. The story just says it was late so he went back to Bethany with his disciples.
B: Back to where the day had started?
A: Maybe to return the colt. The people return to their seats.

Greeting
One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit

A Drop in the Ocean      For quiet reflection as we gather
“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop”
– Mother Teresa

INVITE

Call to Worship      At the last bend in the river...palm branches
People of God, we are here,
in this sacred space, in this sacred moment.
Your daily concerns can be momentarily put aside,
as we recall the stories of our faith.
Here we see conventions turned upside down,
as the king who comes does not claim a crown.
Here salvation is misunderstood.
Here we find the beginning of trouble.
Here we remember whose we are.

*Hymn       Tell Me the Stories of Jesus       VU 357

Lenten Triad Candle Extinguishing (Tenebrae) (One purple candle and Christ candle are lighted prior to worship.)

Child: Let us also remember Christ and the light of his example. (6th candle is extinguished.)
Let us pray: All: God, our Saviour, we praise and adore you. In our mercy you have reached out to us and made us your covenant people. You have called us to new life in Jesus Christ. We want to be a faithful people, O God, yet you know our weakness. Our feet slip easily from your pathway. We trust in the mercy you have shown us in Jesus. Transform our wavering steps into solid conviction for Christ’s sake, we pray. Amen.

Sung Assurance     Like a Mighty River Flowing, v. 1     VU 267

VOICE

Philippians 2:5–11      He humbled himself
One: This is the witness of the early Church. All: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 118      With palm branches in hand      Pts. 1, 3, 4 VU 837

*Hymn       This Is the Day      VU 412

Opening the Word & Lord’s Prayer

Opening the Word 2       Drops in the Ocean

ENGAGE

*Hymn       All Glory, Laud and Honour      VU 122

Minute for Mission & Offering Our Gifts to God

*Offering Prayer
Often we feel what we do and contribute is only a drop in a great ocean of need, but today we send these gifts into the world knowing that each drop is precious and able to make a difference. Bless these our gifts and each of us who gives. Amen.

Prayers of the People

REALIZE

*Hymn       Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross      VU 142

*Commissioning There is a tradition that Palm Sunday is the beginning of a one-week-long service through Holy Week so there is no Amen, just words of encouragement and invitation to gather again next time.
One: As you leave this sacred space,
remember that you are the drops of God’s good news to the world. Remember your sacredness,
remember your place in the eternal flow of life,
and realize this as you shower the world
with kindness and compassion,
and remember there is more of this story to come.
All: We will shower the world with justice.

WEEKLY LENTEN REFLECTION MARCH 29TH

March 29

Mark 11:1–11

Jesus rides a colt into Jerusalem where there are two kinds
of crowds to greet him – those cheering “Hosanna!” and those calling for his death. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Jesus’ Passion. His real identity is about to be revealed. He is the Messiah and this is the week life turns to death and to life again.

This week, reflect on your Lenten journey and share that
story of faith with someone. What has challenged you?
What has surprised you? What do you most look forward
to in the Easter season?

Written on Our Hearts For quiet reflection as we gather
A Hassidic story tells of a rabbi who always told his people that if they studied the Torah it would put scripture on their hearts. One of the students asked, “Why on our hearts and not in them?” The rabbi answered, “Only God can put scripture inside, but reading sacred text can put it on your hearts, and then when your hearts break, the holy words will fall inside.”

Opening the Word 2

Responsive choral reading of Jeremiah 31:31–34
A: The days are surely coming, says God,
B: ...so expect a surprise;
A: when I will make a new covenant with my people,
B: ...not built around signs and laws and land like before.
A: Not like the one I made when I took them out of Egypt
B: ...when God held the people’s hand as a husband would when guiding his wife.
A: I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts.
B: ...It will be essential, intrinsic, inherent, known not learned;
A: and I will be their God and they shall be my people
B: ...like family.
A: No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord.”
B: ...This old way will be obsolete,
A: for they shall all know me,
B: ...God will be in relationship with everyone,
A: from the least to the greatest,
B: ...from the smallest child to the most articulate adult,
A: I will forgive their iniquity and remember their sin no more.
B: So Jeremiah foretold the good news that was to come, and set God’s people on a path of expectation.

Prayer
God, we hear your promise that as love is written on our hearts, love becomes our true nature. In the full knowledge that we are a forgiven people we look with expectation into our world, to do what we can do to share the good news revealed in Jesus and be agents of peace and justice. Amen.

WEEKLY LENTEN REFLECTION MARCH 22ND

Jeremiah 31:31–34

“I will write my covenant on their hearts.” “I will forgive
them.” God seeks to bring hope out of despair, even
God’s own despair over the actions of the people. God
is with those who suffer, and the people hearing Jeremiah’s
prophecy are suffering and in despair. They are
exiled and without hope. God’s covenant is broken. The
people forgot and distanced themselves from God. But
God will restore God’s people. They will know God in
their hearts.

This week, when you read a news story of suffering, look
for evidence of God’s presence – hope, comfort, healing.
And keep searching through newspapers, magazines,
and on the Internet until you find these stories. Seek
to find the moments in life’s suffering where God is
present. Share these stories with others.
