EXCITING 50TH ANNIVERSARY NEWS! EASTER MONDAY RAISING OF BELL

It was a project that required planning and preparation...
...precision...

...partnership...

...pondering...
...prayer!

Perfection!

A Big Thank You! to Paul Kehoe, Almon Chisholm, Sandy MacDonald, John MacLeod Langley, Bob Langdon (and his NSCC students who constructed the stand)

Now on display...what we found under the bell
A few of the smaller items--a Special Agent badge, 2 firecrackers (still intact!), a 1963 penny, a "bell" Christmas tree ornament, tiny duck with head broken off (likely from the fall into the bell).

This note is a mystery--Bentley Chapman was not born until December of 1966, the year St. Mark's was built.
This makes more sense--putting a message like this in the bell when you are about 12 years old. Way to go Bentley!

Call to Worship

One: Christ is risen! Alleluia!

All: We are Easter people, filled with hope and joy!

One: Hear the good news! Mary came to the empty tomb,
and found the risen Christ.

All: Jesus died and rose again – God has had the final
victory over death!

One: We are in God’s presence and bear witness to God’s
love and the holy mystery of Christ’s resurrection.

All: We experience God’s love and power. We are part
of the new thing that God is doing in the world around
us.

One: Alleluia, Christ is risen,

All: Christ is risen indeed, Alleluia.

Opening Prayer
God of the empty tomb, we come into your presence looking for Jesus after his death on the cross. We find the risen Christ and are delighted and transformed. Good News of Good Friday For quiet reflection as we gather
The story can seem predictable. And yet for all the predictability we read the story again year after year, and marvel at the selflessness of Jesus, prepared to stop at nothing – not even death – to proclaim God’s unconditional and never-ending love.

As the Passion story is read today from John's Gospel, pause and notice things that surprise you.

Call to Worship           At the cross
What is Good Friday and why are we gathered here?”
It is a day of contradictions, to be sure.
Now is the “acceptable time” of which Paul spoke
on Ash Wednesday (2 Corinthians 6:2).
We are always dying and rising to new life,
but especially on this day.
We are all the actors in this story: the people shouting “Crucify him!”
and the women who stand vigil at the foot of the cross,
the soldiers who cast lots for his tunic
and Joseph of Arimathea who gave his own tomb for Jesus’ burial.

Today we lament the pain of this world
and we face our complicity in that pain;
We seek to be witnesses to--and participants in
--God’s power over the evil of this world.
Now is the acceptable time – the time when Christ’s death sets us free to choose life.

We Listen for God's Word

Lament            Based on Psalm 22:1-21a
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far away?
I cry out to you by day, but you do not answer;
and at night, I find no rest.
I am scorned and despised, all who see me mock me and shake their heads.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Our ancestors trusted in you, cried out to you, and you delivered them.
They enthroned you with praise.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Yet you took me from the womb, and from my birth you have been my God.
Do not be far from me, for trouble is near.
My troubles surround me like lions ready to pounce.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are dust; my heart is like wax, melting inside; my tongue is dry and I cannot speak; my limbs are nothing, and my ribs are bare.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
My enemies encircle me; they stare and gloat;
they divide my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
But you, O Savior, do not be far away!
O my Help, come quickly to deliver me!

Sung Response:

Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy,
Lord have mercy on us.                VU 946

One: Now is the acceptable time!
Help us to be your hands, Holy One,
All: reaching out to heal the hurting of this world.
One: Help us to be your ears, Holy One,
All: hearing and understanding the cries for justice and mercy.
One: Help us to be your arms, Holy One,
All: embracing the sorrow and offering comfort.
One: Help us to be your feet, Holy One,
All: walking with those who suffer and guiding the journey toward peace.
One: Let us not forsake you any longer, O God.
All: Now is the acceptable time!

The Lord's Prayer

We Go To Serve God

Words of Hope        based on Psalm 22:21b-31

The Righteous One has not hidden from us,
but has heard our cries and come to our aid.
You who stand in awe of our God, shout for joy!
Our Rescuer saves us from the mouth of the lion and the horns of the wild oxen.
You who stand in awe of our God, sing praises!
The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek comfort shall find it.
You who stand in awe of our God, tell of God’s goodness!
The ends of the earth, the families of nations, will worship our Deliverer.
You who stand in awe of our God, bow down and rise up!
Proclaim deliverance to all generations, saying that God has done this!
Thanks be to God!

The service ends without a benediction but rather in silence. Use the silence as an opportunity for personal reflection, and then leave in your own time.

Lenten Triad Candle Extinguishing (Tenebrae)
Written by Sue Browning, Grace United Church, Sarnia, Ont. Adapted.
Gathering, Lent/Easter 2013, page 58. Used with permission.
(One candle of triad plus Christ candle are lit before the service)
One: Today is the sixth Sunday of Lent. Lent is a time to think about the things that block us from following God's way of loving and caring for this world and one another.
Two: Today we will put out our sixth Lenten candle. This candle represents helplessness.
One: As the candle is put out, let us pray in silence for God to remove helplessness within us, empowering us to believe that when we work with God we can change ourselves and can make the world a better place.
(Snuff out sixth Lenten candle and then pause with head bowed for silence.)
Knowing that God accepts us for who we are, but loves us into who we can be, let us join together in this song,

Opening the Word & The Lord’s Prayer
The Gospel Acclamation
Luke 19:28–40 A Choral Reading
One: After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying,
Jesus: ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” just say this: “The Lord needs it.” ’
One: So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,
Owners of Colt (choir): ‘Why are you untying the colt?’
One: They said,
Disciples (Men): ‘The Lord needs it.’
One: Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying,All: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!’

One: Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,
Pharisees (Women): ‘Teacher, order your disciples to stop.’
One: He answered,
Jesus: ‘I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.’
One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
All: Thanks be to God.

*Offering Prayer
On this day when we are so very conscious of all that you have given to us, O God, we offer a small token of appreciation to you. Receive these gifts that we give to your church, and bless them to continue the work that Jesus began, of proclaiming your unconditional love for all people. As we offer these gifts, we rededicate ourselves to ministry in Christ’s name. Amen.

WE GO TO SERVE GOD

*Hymn      All Glory, Laud and Honour        VU 122
* Commissioning
There is a tradition that Palm Sunday is the beginning of
a one-week-long service through Holy Week so there is no
Amen, just words of encouragement and invitation to gather
again next time.
One: Jesus begins the journey of Holy Week with a triumphal entry into Jerusalem and continues to teach us to be humble and obedient.
All: We are invited to join him on the road with those who so desperately need our love and compassion today.
One: Come, let us join him.
