Connecting with life
We are not always welcome in a place, nor do we always want to welcome others to our place. Reflect on a time when you have not felt welcome.
*How do you react to a lack of welcome
*When have you ever lingered in a place where you weren’t welcome?
*What (if anything) helped you to move on from this? If you are still there, or still harmed by this experience what keeps you holding on to this? What would help you to move on?
*When have you been unwelcoming? Why?

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Greeting
One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.

*Introit  There Is Room for All MV 62

Call to Worship
One: Jesus was rejected
All: by his friends, by his family, by his hometown.
One: But Jesus created trust
All: for his disciples, for the community, for the world.
One: In the midst of rejection, let us build acceptance:
All: for our children, for our community, for ourselves.
One: Come, let us worship God.

Opening Prayer
Loving God, you welcome us always and everywhere. No matter how we might feel about ourselves and our place in the world, you open your door and throw your arms open. Help us to feel loved and included by you, and to share that sense of joy and welcome with others. Help us to make our circle wider. Amen.

*Hymn      Draw the Circle Wide                MV 145

Prayer for Healing (Prayer of Confession)
You are invited to participate in this prayer by imaginatively or actually brushing away your confessions as one brushes lint off a jacket or sand off your bathing suit.

Words of Assurance
One: You are God’s precious child, held in God’s arms and
brushed clean by grace. Leave behind the dust of things which hold you back from that grace and step into life restored and renewed.

Opening the Word and the Lord’s Prayer

The Gospel Acclamation Community scripture reading
One: He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said,
Men: Where did this man get all this?
Women: What is this wisdom that has been given to him?
Men: What deeds of power are being done by his hands!
Women: Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary
and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon,
and are not his sisters here with us?
One: And they took offence at him. Then Jesus said to them,
Two: Prophets are not without honour, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house.
One: And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them,
Two: Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.
One: So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent.
Men: Repent, in the name of God!
Women: Repent and be healed!
One: They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
Two: This is the Good News of the Risen One.
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
