November 20th, 2016-Reign of Christ Sunday

A thought around which to gather as we worship--On this last Sunday of the season, we anticipate that new beginning again for creation, which God envisioned in the One sent to transform and save the world. In this moment between this season’s end and the beginning of a new season and church year, we step back to ground ourselves once again in the nature and purpose of the one God sent, Jesus the Christ, whose name and transformative efforts we carry forward. WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Greeting

One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.

*Introit Psalm 23   The Lord’s My Shepherd          VU 747

*Call to Worship Based on Colossians 1:2b, 3–6

Concluding with--One: So let us give thanks to God for this grace
All: and for the supreme goodness we know and share
and celebrate here. Come, let us worship.

*Opening Prayer          Based on Colossians 1:9–12

We pray, loving God,
that we be filled with a knowledge of your will,
in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
Help us to lead lives worthy of you,
fully pleasing to you,
as we bear fruit in every good work
and grow in the knowledge of you, our Creator. Amen.

* Hymn              I Feel the Winds of God       VU 625

Prayer of Confession Based on Colossians 1:13

Saving God, find us in the shadowed places into which we have stumbled. There we embrace powers that breed a destructive kind of chaos, which threatens to overwhelm us and all we touch. There we dominate and inflict hurt on others, ourselves, or you. Rescue us, we pray. Bring the light of Christ to shine on us, lighting the shadows, and showing the way to hope and to you. Amen.

Words of Affirmation

God – living, breathing, and working in Jesus the Christ – has made a way for us to know forgiveness.
As we lay ourselves open to God’s mercy and care, we will find the new life promised by Christ, full of abundance and joy.
In the name of Jesus the Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Jeremiah 23:1-6 God will raise up new shepherds for Israel.

One: This is the witness of the Hebrew people. All: Thanks be to God.
