Announcements The Work of Church and Community

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Greeting
One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.

Acknowledging the Traditional Territory

Lighting the Candle

Sung response: I am the light of the world!
You people come and follow me!
If you follow and love you’ll learn the mystery
Of what you were meant to do and be. VU 87
We are reminded of the light of the world: Jesus Christ.
We are reminded that he is the light of the world
and that he called us the light of the world.
Therefore, we light this candle to remind us of that light—
that is ours, and that we are!
Sung response: I am the light of the world!

Call to Worship

Sell all you have, and distribute the proceeds!
To whom? To our friends? To our neighbours?
Distribute them to the poor and the needy!
Can I choose who gets what I give?
Distribute the proceeds! Without question! Without condition!
Hmm, sounds less fun. Why can’t I choose who gets it?
Distribute to those who are beloved of God,
the ones who bring out the God-flavour
and the God-colours in the world!
Ohhh, I get it. This is a church thing.
Loving those whom God loved,
sharing with those
whom we call brothers and sisters.
And your hearts will be glad and generous,
and we will praise God!

Opening Prayer

* Hymn Psalm 100    Make a joyful noise          VU 820

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Deuteronomy 26:1–11 Bring tithes. One: This is the witness of the Hebrew people. All: Thanks be to God.

Acts 2:44–47 They would sell their possessions and goods

All who believed were together and had all things in common;
they would sell their possessions and goods
and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need.
Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple,
they broke bread at home and ate their food
with glad and generous hearts,
praising God and having the goodwill of all the people.
And day by day the Lord added to their number those
who were being saved.

Go with hearts that are glad and generous;
go with lives that have been touched and are full.
Go and be salt-flavouring and light-bearing,
and allow the God-colours and the God-flavours
to be seen and tasted.
Go in love—God’s love.
Go in love—known in Jesus.
Go in love—empowered by Love’s Power, the Holy Spirit,
now and always.

*Choral Amen
