Prayer Shawl Knitting Circle

The Prayer Shawl Knitting Circle has begun to branch out! We have a good supply of Prayer Shawls on hand and are now knitting or crocheting Chemo Caps for Cathy's Place, the cancer support resource room at St. Martha's. In response to requests for the Chemo Caps patterns, here they are!



Chemo Cap--Knit


Sizes
To fit Child 5/8 yrs (Adult)
MATERIALS
Bernat® Handicrafter® Cotton Stripes™
(100 g/3.5 oz; 152 m/166 yds)
Sizes 4 mm (U.S. 6) and 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) knitting needles or
size needed to obtain gauge.
GAUGE
20 sts and 26 rows = 4" [10 cm] with larger needles in stocking st.

Instructions
With smaller needles, cast on 86 (94) sts.
1st row: (RS). K2. *P2. K2. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P2. *K2. P2. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows of (K2. P2) ribbing once more, inc 0 (2) sts evenly
across last row. 86 (96) sts.
Change to larger needles and cont in stocking st until 4 (5)"
[10 (12.5) cm] total length, ending with a purl row and dec
1 (4) st(s) evenly across last row. 85 (92) sts.
Shape top: 1st row: (RS). K1. *K2tog. K10 (11). Rep from * to end
of row. 78 (85) sts.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd row: K1. *K2tog. K9 (10). Rep from * to end of row. 71 (78) sts.
5th row: K1. *K2tog. K8 (9). Rep from * to end of row. 64 (71) sts.
7th row: K1. *K2tog. K7 (8). Rep from * to end of row. 57 (64) sts.
9th row: K1. *K2tog. K6 (7). Rep from * to end of row. 50 (57) sts.
Cont in same manner, dec 7 sts on every following alt row to 15 sts.
Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts
and fasten securely. Sew back seam.






Chemo Cap--Crochet

Cap fits most women.
Finished Circumference = 20¾”.
RED HEART® “Eco-Cotton™ Blend”: 2 balls 1740 Rose.
Crochet Hooks: 4mm [US G-6] and 5mm [US H-8].
Split-lock stitch marker, yarn needle.
GAUGE: 15 sts = 4”; 17 rounds = 4” in sc with larger hook.
CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain
the gauge.

CAP
Round 1: With larger hook, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook,
pm in last st of round. Move marker up at end of each
round – 6 sc.
Round 2: Sc in front and back loop of each sc around – 12 sc.
Continue alternating front and back loop throughout.
Increase by working 1 sc in front and back loop of one st
as follows.
Round 3: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc] 6 times – 18 sc.
Round 4: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc] 6 times – 24 sc.
Round 5: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc] 6 times – 30 sc.
Round 6: [2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 6 times – 36 sc.
Continue in this manner to increase 6 sc every round with
one more sc between increases until there are 78 sc. Then
work even in continuous rounds until work measures 7½”
from center; join with a slip st in next sc; TURN.
Brim
With smaller hook, ch 1, work even in continuous rounds
of sc in both loops (NOT alternating front and back loops
as before) for 7 rounds; join in next sc. Fasten off leaving a
long tail. Roll sc brim to the outside and sew in place.
Band
With larger hook, ch 75.
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each
ch across; turn – 74 sc.
Row 2: Ch 2, * skip next sc, (dc, ch 1, dc) all in next sc,
skip next sc; repeat from * to last sc; dc in last sc; turn.
Rows 3 and 4: Ch 2, * (dc, ch 1, dc) all in next ch-1 space;
repeat from * to last st; dc in top of ch-2; turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in each st across; do NOT turn – 74 sc.
Row 6: With right side still facing, ch 1, * sc in next sc to
the RIGHT; repeat from * across; bring opposite end of
band up and with right sides facing, slip st ends of band
together; ch 1, ** sc in next sc to the RIGHT; repeat from **
around opposite edge. Fasten off.

Flower
Ch 30, (dc, ch 3, slip st, [ch 3, dc, ch 3, slip st] twice) all in
4th ch from hook, * (slip st, ch 3, dc, ch 3, slip st) all in next
ch; repeat from * across. Fasten off. Starting with the first 3
petals, spiral the petals around in layers and stitch in place
from the back. Sew flower on band to cover seam.
Slide band over hat and tack in place.
