REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

ADVENT REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

December 22

Matthew 1:18–25

As Advent draws to a close, we focus on the birth of
Jesus. Joseph’s role in the birth and life of Jesus is often
speculated, but one thing is sure – he trusted God’s will
and stood by Mary during a difficult time in her life.
Joseph provides a home and family for Jesus, an example
that all of us can learn from today. And Joseph’s trust in
God’s message from a dream shows us how God can communicate with us and give us direction and guidance.
As we welcome our Saviour into the world, may we also
welcome God’s guidance in our lives.

This week as your to-do list grows longer in the lead-up
to Christmas, pause for 10 minutes each day to read the
focus scripture and think of the ways God is present in
your life and even in your dreams.

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Greeting
One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.
Call to Worship           Adapted from Luke 1:47–55
One: Our souls magnify the Most High,
All: and our spirits rejoice in God our Saviour!
One: God’s mercy is for those who love and revere God, from generation to generation.
All: God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly;
One: God has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.
All: Blessed be God’s name. Let us worship God!

Advent Candlelighting Liturgy

Voice 1: On this third Sunday of Advent, we light three candles, illuminating God’s truth. Our first candle was for peace, and the second was for hope. Today, our third candle is for joy. From prophets like Isaiah and Mary, we hear God’s promises: the blind shall see, the deaf shall hear, the lame shall leap, the desert shall be watery.
Child: Come, let us walk in the light!
All: We say to those with fearful hearts, “Do not fear! Here is your God!” (Isaiah 35:4)
Voice 2: God’s promises sometimes seem impossible, and because we are human, we doubt; but the promises burn with everlasting light. Today, even in an unsteady world, may we find new ways to look into the light of Advent and rejoice that God’s promises are true for each of us and all of us. (the pink candle is lit)
Child: Come, let us walk in the light!
All: Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! (Isaiah 2:5)
* Candlelighting Hymn           Hope Is a Star Verse 3            VU 7
Opening Prayer
Holy God, in a topsy-turvy world, you both steady us and you rock-and-roll us into new life, new challenges, new ways of seeing our lives. As we enter into worship together with you today, may we play and pray in ways that help us better love and live. You are always opening up new world orders among us. Transform us for your new world! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

ADVENT REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

December 15

Luke 1:47–55

Mary proclaims her devotion to God and God’s liberation
in her Magnificat. She’s carrying the very one who will
continue the work of liberation in the lives of the poor
and marginalized. Mary herself becomes a prophet, declaring God’s vision of a world where God has “brought
down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the
lowly…filled the hungry with good things, and sent the
rich away empty.” Mary turns toward God in faith and follows the path before her. She takes on the role of bringing
liberation to the world. Will we follow her example?

This week what role does God want you to play in the
liberation of the poor and marginalized in your local or
even global community? What steps might you take this
week to step out as a prophet for justice and liberation?

Call to Worship
One: Come together, cow and bear, lion and ox, come together;

All: come together, leaders and followers, give glory to God.
One: Let us prepare to be led by the liberator of all the world.
All: Let us worship God.
Advent Candlelighting Liturgy
Voice 1: On this second Sunday of Advent, we light two candles, illuminating God’s truth. Our first candle was for peace. Today, our second light is for hope. God promised God’s people that a leader would rise up among us – but that it would be a different kind of leader, and a different kind of power. Even with growling beasts all around, a child leads the way.
Child: Come, let us walk in the light!
All: Just as the sun endures, may God’s light burn without end!
Voice 2: (read while candles are lit): God tells us of a coming power that will be a paradox, not always easy for us to understand, but we are assured that the hope of Advent lies in trusting a truth that will set all of us free, predators and prey alike.
Child: Come, let us walk in the light!

REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

ADVENT REFLECTIONS ON SCRIPTURE

December 8

Isaiah 11:1–10

The prophet shares a hope-filled vision with us – a vision
of harmony and understanding – and presents an unlikely
subject for leading us toward this vision – “a little child.”

Even more unlikely, Isaiah explains that animals who are
enemies will lie down together. They will reconcile and be
adversaries no more. These verses seem unbelievable, but
longing for their fulfillment is the stuff of hope. Isaiah’s
vision pushes us to re-think the way we understand power
dynamics today and show us that no matter what, peace
inside ourselves and in the world is possible.

This week reach out with a note or phone call to someone
with whom you often clash.
