Call to Worship

*Processional Hymn Hosanna, Loud Hosanna VU 123

Opening Prayer
May we be your disciples today, O Jesus, where we know what we cry, where we take to heart the hosannas and live them beyond the parade.
May we be your supporters today, O Jesus, where we know the saviour you are, where we intend to follow you from gate to garden.
May we be your voice today, O Jesus, where we cry out against the injustices, where we stake our faith and lives on what you begin here today. Amen.
Lenten Triad Candle Extinguishing (Tenebrae)
Written by Sue Browning, Grace United Church, Sarnia, Ont. Adapted.
Gathering, Lent/Easter 2013, page 58. Used with permission.
(One candle of triad plus Christ candle are lit before the service)
One: Today is the sixth Sunday of Lent. Lent is a time to think about the things that block us from following God's way of loving and caring for this world and one another.
Two: Today we will put out our sixth Lenten candle. This candle represents helplessness.
One: As the candle is put out, let us pray in silence for God to remove helplessness within us, empowering us to believe that when we work with God we can change ourselves and can make the world a better place.
(Snuff out sixth Lenten candle and then pause with head bowed for silence.)
Knowing that God accepts us for who we are, but loves us into who we can be, let us join together in this song,

Opening the Word & The Lord’s Prayer
The Gospel Acclamation
Luke 19:28–40 A Choral Reading
One: After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying,
Jesus: ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” just say this: “The Lord needs it.” ’
One: So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,
Owners of Colt (choir): ‘Why are you untying the colt?’
One: They said,
Disciples (Men): ‘The Lord needs it.’
One: Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying,All: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!’

One: Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,
Pharisees (Women): ‘Teacher, order your disciples to stop.’
One: He answered,
Jesus: ‘I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.’
One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
All: Thanks be to God.

Minute for Mission & Offering Our Gifts to God
*Offering Prayer
On this day when we are so very conscious of all that you have given to us, O God, we offer a small token of appreciation to you. Receive these gifts that we give to your church, and bless them to continue the work that Jesus began, of proclaiming your unconditional love for all people. As we offer these gifts, we rededicate ourselves to ministry in Christ’s name. Amen.
Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

WE GO TO SERVE GOD

*Hymn      All Glory, Laud and Honour        VU 122
* Commissioning
There is a tradition that Palm Sunday is the beginning of
a one-week-long service through Holy Week so there is no
Amen, just words of encouragement and invitation to gather
again next time.
One: Jesus begins the journey of Holy Week with a triumphal entry into Jerusalem and continues to teach us to be humble and obedient.
All: We are invited to join him on the road with those who so desperately need our love and compassion today.
One: Come, let us join him.
