UNITED CHURCH RESPONSE TO ALBERTA FLOODS

Greetings from the General Council Office,

Information related to The United Church of Canada's
response to the Alberta floods has now been updated on the
church's website.
http://www.unitedchurch.ca/communications/news/response/130626

HOW YOU CAN HELP

PRAY

At this difficult time the people in Alberta affected by the floods need
our prayers. We also need to thank and pray for the safety of
emergency personnel engaged in search and rescue, and the Red
Cross and Canadian Forces that are assisting them. Some people
are living in fear for those thought to have been carried away by the
floods and who remain missing. We know a few families are already
grieving the loss of loved ones. We pray for all those whose lives
have been disrupted and who have suffered great loss. As we hold
them in prayer, let us also remember those who seek to provide
support and counsel. We think of clergy who will be working hard to
draw communities together, and for city officials, public servants,
and town managers for their tireless efforts to bring stability.
As Isaiah assured the people of God's presence so long ago,
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through
the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you" (Isaiah 43:1).

INVITATION TO WORSHIP WITH HOLY TRINITY ANGLICAN PORT HAWKESBURY THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 30TH

Holy Trinity Anglican Church,
 Port Hawkesbury, N.S.
Ephesians 2:19 So now you Gentiles are no long strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. (NLT)

May 28th, 2013

To our Brothers and Sisters in Christ;

It is with great pleasure that the council members of Holy Trinity invite the congregations of St. Mark’s and St. David’s United churches to worship with us on Sunday, June 30th, 2013 at 11 am. We also invite your choir members to join our choir.

Over the past year, Rev’d Nan and I have been getting to know one another and have had the pleasure of working together on a few occasions. It became quite evident that Nan and I appreciate ‘ecumenical’ events/worship but felt that maybe we could find new ways to deepen this connection. As both Nan and I are ‘from away’ we recognize that the majority of members of the three congregations already know each other. Many of you have worked together, live next door to one another, or are, in fact, related to one another and you share your joys and sorrow. We believe that our worship together will enrich the deep relationships you already have, and help further the Kingdom of God.

For practical reasons we have planned a simple pot luck meal after the service. We ask that your members provide sandwiches and our congregation will provide the rest of the meal.

As we are conscious of the stress that can manifest itself when we ‘miss’ a Sunday’s offering – we suggest that you put your offering in your own church envelope and after the service we will ensure that each church receives the appropriate monies.

We look forward to having you join us in worship on June 30th.

Yours in Christ,

Rev’d Evelyn R Knorr
Rector

Spiritual Practice-The Practice of Silence

The Practice of Silence

The Basic Practice Silence is often referred to in terms of
space: the immensity inside, the cave of the heart, the oasis
of quiet, the inner sanctuary, the interior castle, the sacred
center where God dwells. For centuries, people have used
this practice as a resting and renewal stop on the spiritual
journey. It provides a way to periodically withdraw from
the world. You may go into silence as a prelude to prayer, or
you may seek it as the place where through meditation you
can contact your deeper self and Spirit. How can you find
this inner quietude, tranquility, and calm? You must make
room for it – literally. Find a space of physical silence where
you can sit quietly, away from distracting demands, voices,
and sounds. Go there every day. It is the gateway to your
interior silence.

Why do this Practice? Our world contrasts sharply with the
inner world of silence. We are bombarded daily with the
noise of crowded residences, workplaces, and entertainment
sites. The clamorous voices of the media are always trying
to get our attention. We live amidst the seemingly relentless
roar of our machines, our tools, and our toys. Very few
places today are soundproof. The norm is noisy verging on
chaotic. The Tower of Babel still stands in our midst, a grim
reminder that our various expressions can divide and even
conquer us. When this world feels overwhelming, silence is
a powerful antidote. This practice increases our capacity for
contemplation. It enables us to focus our attention on deep
matters of the heart. It is where we can commune with things
greater than the cacophony all around us.

Mantra Rhythmically chant the words of this prayer (based
on Psalm 46:10), pausing for contemplation after each line.

Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be.

Practice of the Day “Silence engenders the space called, so
evocatively and beautifully by Benedictine monk, David
Steindl-Rast, ‘God bathing.’ In God bathing, the body is still,
speech is silent, the mind is at peace. One bathes in the presence
of, the very Being of God.”
– Kathleen Dowling Singh, in The Grace in Dying

Set aside a special time for God bathing.

Engaging in this Practice

Personal reflection
❑❑ Incorporate minutes of silence into your daily routine:
observing one silent minute at your desk before beginning
work, while sitting at a park bench during lunch, in
your car before starting the drive home, or after watching
the evening news.
❑❑ Write a response in your journal to this thought by
Hermann Hesse: “Within you there is a stillness and
a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and
be yourself.” Go to that quiet place. If you want, draw
a picture or describe the qualities of your inner silence.
❑❑ Write about an experience of silence. Where were you?
Was it during a particular period of your life? Did you
enjoy being silent? Did you find any part of the experience
difficult? What did you learn? (Assess your aptitude
for silence.)

Group discussion
❑❑ Share a story about times when you tapped into the
potential of silence as a seedbed for creativity or inspiration.
❑❑ When have you found it was necessary to go away to
escape the noise of the modern world? Where did you
go and what kind of silence did you encounter?
❑❑ What role has silence played in your spiritual development?
If you were raised in a religious tradition, how
was silence regarded?
❑❑ Eat a meal this week together in silence. Afterwards,
discuss your experiences and decide whether to make
this a regular part of your household routine.
❑❑ Sharing silence in a group context is a worthwhile discipline.
Join a group or form one of your own. It could
be organized around mindfulness practice, centering
prayer, or just sitting in silence without any structure.
❑❑ Many communities, surprisingly, have few places where
people can go to be quiet, safely, alone. Survey your
community to identify places of peace and quiet. Then
organize a group to develop other sanctuaries of silence.

Lift High the Cross!

You would be surprised to know what some St. Mark's Congregational Board members got up to after their monthly meeting last night. We held our collective breath as this seemingly impossible task progressed. With many hands the task was completed, sort of!

Lions Club Dinner

After 50 years, the Port Hawkesbury Lions Club held their last meeting at St. Mark's Church hall on Saturday, June 15th, before disbanding. Over these years, this extremely dedicated club of men and women has been responsible for fundraising over 2.5 million dollars and donating it to the people of Port Hawkesbury and beyond. At this meeting they generously distributed their final fund-raised $40,000 to local groups. Their disappearance from the Port Hawkesbury fabric will be sorely missed by this community. Unfortunately, volunteerism is becoming a scarce activity in our world.

Members of the Lions Club and their guests raved about the delicious, perfectly cooked roast beef dinner and scrumptious desserts provided by the ladies of St. Mark's. Great team work girls!!!

St. Mark's  ladies were so busy preparing the dinner for the Lions Club, that they
did not have time to stop for a photo opportunity! Result: blurred photo!

Karen, Vida and Emily were part of the prep and serve crew.

Lions President Donnie MacPherson welcomed everyone to the final meeting of the club.

Bill Charlton accepted a donation on behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43.

Dave Chapman was very grateful on behalf of Inverness County Cares for a cheque to help feed orphans in Nairobi.

Clark Brander, Chair of St. Mark's Trustees and Finance Committee accepted a cheque from the Lions.

All of the recipients who received gifts of money from the Lions Club to further their charity work.
