"Common Vision: Singing to End Hunger", World Food Day, October 16th at St. Mark's United Church, Port Hawkesbury. We join with churches and communities across Canada as they raise their voices in song and help make sure our entire human family is well-fed. An ecumenical/community concert in support of the work the Canadian Foodgrains Bank is doing to help alleviate hunger. Interested in singing in the choir? Practices at 6:30 Wednesdays until the concert date, starting September 27th at St. Mark's.

St. Mark's Board will be meeting this week. A chart re this congregation's past and present realities has been in the church entry over the summer. As well, the congregation has been invited to add to the list of possible future scenarios for St. Mark's that were generated at the June Board meeting. Today you have been given 3 stickers as you arrived. In the lobby you will find flipchart paper with options for movement into the future. As a way of your Board getting a feel for how the congregation would like to proceed, we invite you to place your stickers beside your preferred option or options (ie. you can place all 3 stickers with one suggestion you really like or divide them up). WORLD FOOD DAY OCTOBER 16TH EVENT

Living the mini-Season of Creation in the Season after Pentecost

Finding God in Creation 

Whether through personal experience or images from TV or movies, we can all imagine the different parts of creation that are the focus for this season. We know the vistas, and the plants and animals, even the people, that live in forests, wilderness/outback regions, along rivers, and in the differ­ent landscapes that cover the earth. 

During this Season of Creation we hear the story of creation through the voices of Paul, David, and John of Patmos, and called to even greater awareness of all parts of creation. We might call these writers advocates and allies for creation. We are challenged to hear in their words the call to also be advocates in today’s world. 

Paul, David, and John invite us to encounter God in creation, and bring messages of God’s love and presence with us. David talks of an “inescapable God” who is everywhere, and ready for a relationship with us (Psalm 139:7–12). In Romans 8:18–27, Paul reminds us of the groaning pains of creation. This is a message familiar to us today as we grapple with the human effects of taking advantage and doing harm to creation. Paul’s address to the people in Athens (Acts 17:22–28) is intended to evangelize, and so too can our work to care for creation, alongside people of different faiths and perhaps no faith, be a witness to our faith. John’s vision of the river of life in Revelation 22:1–5 invites us to find hope, promise, and renewal in a river that connects all nations to God. Guided by God through the Holy Spirit, we can nurture and care for all creation, and be leaves of healing for all nations. When we work to bring renewed life and peace where there is neglect and violence against creation, we will find God there. 

The Season of Creation is celebrated during the first four Sundays of September leading up to the feast of St. Francis of Assisi October 4. St. Francis honoured and respected creation through the way that he lived and is a model for each one of us today. Sundays this year are Forest, Land, Wilderness/Outback, and River.

Thoughts around which to gather as we worship: This week, reflect on all of the ways you interact with God’s creation in your everyday life. Pay attention to the simplest of interactions at home, work, or school – from the air you breathe, to the trees outside your window, to the food you eat. At each moment of recognition, say a short prayer of gratitude.

We join with churches and communities across Canada as they raise their voices in song and help make sure our entire human family is well-fed. Prayer Shawl Knitting Circle: Knitters and crocheters gather in the parlour of St. Mark’s on the 3rd Monday of each month. The next time of gathering is September 18th at 1:00 p.m.

St. David’s Session Meeting on Wednesday, September 6th at 7 p.m. at St. David’s Church Hall. Please make every effort to attend.

The Quilt Show & Sale – Canada 150th Celebration at St. David’s raised $2,432.00 for the Church. The TeaTime Quilters want to thank the men who helped with the quilts and signs. The ladies did a great job providing biscuits and oatcakes for the many guests that visited the Church. Thank You to everyone.
