We Will Remember Them
In the coming days, our minds will become focused on remembrance yet again. Our media has quite rightly brought before our eyes once more the awful conflicts and lives lost in the battlefields of the past. Unfortunately, also our ever present military activities of the hour.
- It was exactly 90 years ago, November 11th, 1918, that the guns of August, 1914, fell silent and we began counting the cost of the “war to end all wars”. Quite considerable, indeed. Worth looking at again: 65 million persons were armed, and 10 million died.
- 619,636 Canadians were members of the forces. One in ten never returned.
- The RCN had only ten ships at the time. They served as well as they could.
- 25,000 personnel served in the growing British air service/force with salutary contribution by pilots & ground crew.
- 3,846 became prisoners; 3,748 returned.
Such are the closing statistics. Nearly every community in Canada bore its grief as a terrible pall. It is astonishing how many descendants of the fallen have kept true to the memory of those heroes of 1918. Ninety years of remembrance. May we all never fail in the regard for their loss. The blood red poppy of Flanders made indelible by Col. John MacRae is surely the noblest of emblems.
Speaking of Flanders fields poetry, one down to earth parody on a song of the day was:
Sing me to sleep where the bullets fall;
Let me forget the war and all.
Damp is my dugout, cold are my feet,
Nothing but bully and biscuit to eat.
Sing me to sleep where bombs explode
And shrapnel shells are รก la-mode.
Over the sandbag helmets you find

Waiting for someone to sing me to sleep.
A cross-Canada project by Canada’s National History Society raised money and financed a visual display vigil showing the names of all the fallen and displayed for 30 seconds on a projected moving scroll, with 8 seconds ‘still’ for each name. It was opened for the first time by H.M. Queen Elizabeth, in London, projected on the wall of Canada House (Trafalgar Square). It came to Halifax November 5th. It was shown on the walls of St. Paul’s Anglican church, Halifax. Former premier, John Hamm, presided.
In Port Hawkesbury, our Cenotaph Veteran’s Park is pretty well completed. Benches are now fully installed with commemorative plaques placed by family members.
The new Flagpole at the monument will be dedicated on Remembrance Day. It bears the commemoration to Dr. V. Gudzdiol, well-known family physician of the town, an allied Naval Officer & Prisoner of War during WWII. His widow, Mrs. Gudzdiol endowed this memorial.
We recall today, also those who paid the supreme sacrifice of WWII And Korea. Let us not overlook the Peacekeepers who have also gone to their eternal rest in the quest of Peace.
Let me end this article with an exhortation that has almost become a cliche: “Support our troops”. I was inclined to list the casualties of our commitments abroad here, but I thought that maybe I should ask you all to visit the Legion building. There you will find a tree, hung Christmas style, with the photos of all our heroes who lost there lives in Afgahnistan and elsewhere in recent years.
Lord God of Hosts be with us yet, Lest we forget, Lest we forget.

St. Mark’s Congregational Board
During the last congregational meeting, I was waiting in the Narthex for the committees to meet in the main hall, when I heard laughter echoing from 3 different directions. My first thought was “way too much” frivolity for something as serious as a board meeting. Then I thought, wasn’t it great to belong to a group that was having so much fun, and why wasn’t I in one of the groups doing all that laughing? Sure there are important, serious discussions, but there is also a lot of laughter and fun.
During January, the nomination committee will be asking you to join the board committees. If you can spare one evening a month, consider volunteering. You’ll find it very rewarding.
As I am moving to Dartmouth, I would like to thank the committee for all their support. I would also like to thank Ruth, our secretary, who keeps the whole ball rolling. It has been great, getting to know the LeGrows, even though it has only been one year.
I have enjoyed my years at St. Mark’s Church. I have made a lot of friends and have found my years spent here welcoming. Thank-you.

St. David’s Official Board
Our last Official Board meeting was cancelled since we did not have a quorum to hold a meeting.
On November 29th we are holding a Goods and Service auction.
The first Saturday of Advent, December 6th, we will decorate for Christmas.
December 14, we will be holding our White Gift service.
Our insurance company did a inspection of our Building and gave a number of recommendations for St. David’s to up grade.
A recommendation will be presented to St. David’s congregation to pick a date for our anniversary so we will know in advance each year when the service will take place. This will certainly make for better planning.
Our sympathy to Myrta Barrell-Swain on the passing of her mother, Patsy Swain.

St. Mark’s Worship and Pastoral Care Committee
Since our last Contact in June, 151 members were served Communion on June 15th and 64 members were served on October 5th, which was World Wide Communion Sunday.
On Sunday June 1st, we were pleased to have members of L’Arche look after the full service including greeting, collecting, reading. The congregation thoroughly enjoyed their service.
We appreciated the summer relief for pulpit supply provided during Rev. LeGrow’s vacation by Lana MacLean, July 6; Organist Al Fougere and the choir, July 13th; Lorna MacRury, July 20th and Lana MacLean on July 27th.
Anniversary Sunday was celebrated on June 15, along with the congregation from St. David’s and a potluck dinner was enjoyed by everyone after the service.
Since our last Contact the following marriage ceremonies were celebrated:
• Chris Robert Crocker and Amber Kristin McLean on July 19th, 2008
• Kenneth Gerald Landry and Tara Tennille MacDonald on August 2nd, 2008
A pamphlet and questionnaire concerning The Role of the Ministry Today was inserted in the bulletin in September asking the congregation to consider the questions being asked and to provide a response to the General Council, if they so wished, by either regular mail or email.

A new Pastoral Charge payroll service is being developed for the United Church. We will try to be ready to implement it for the first of 2009 to avoid the duplication that would arise with a fiscal year split between two systems.
It was decided to place the baby barn for the mower on the manse property. Volunteer mowers were recruited to operate the new mower during the summer. A string trimmer (whippersnipper) was purchased for the places the mower can’t reach.
A doorbell was installed at the rear door to ring in the Minister’s office. This is to enable visitors without keys to summon the attention of whoever is in the office (without tapping at the window), so they can be admitted.
The charge for hall rental was discussed and it was decided to leave it at $50.

We donated $50 each for two delegates to the Youth Forum, one from St. Mark’s congregation, the other representing the Youth Group.
Our usual meeting date in June fell on the St. Mark’s Anniversary Sunday, so the meeting was postponed until the following Sunday. In October, our usual meeting date fell on the St. David’s Anniversary Sunday, so again the meeting was postponed until the following Sunday.
The Men’s Group purchased the shed for the new ride-on mower, at a cost of $817.51. The shed has been erected in the back yard of the manse, giving easy access to both lawns. Those members who volunteered to mow with the new mower report that it performed well in the task.
We were still in a position to make our annual $500 donation to the General Fund this year, so we did so in September.

St. David’s Board of StewardsSt. David’s Board of Stewards had a successful BBQ in conjunction with the Annual Quilt Show and Sale, August 8th to 17th. We also had a very sucessful Roast Beef Dinner on September 26th. Both of these events were possible and profitable due to everyone’s help and generosity. A very special thank you to all who helped in any way.
The Stewards are planning a Talent and Treasure Auction to be held November 29th.

Once again, St. Mark’s Helping Hands held a very successful Fall Yard Sale with lots of exciting items to please the buyers.
It was decided not to have a Bake Sale with this Yard Sale, but to save the Bake Table for the spring. The Sale raised $789.00.

Plans are in place for our annual Christmas Dinner Boxes project.
Ideas are being discussed for a fundraising event to take place in the new year.

During the summer we served lunch for the Funerals of Kimberley Embree, Jean Bennet MacKeigan and Millie Barrie. We also made sandwiches for the MacEachen- MacRae wedding. Now we are preparing for our Christmas Bazaar which will be held on Friday, November the 28th, at 7 p.m.

Our first fund-raiser of 2008 was a buffet supper for three buses of seniors from the Sydney area on May 31st, which made a profit of $1,419.46. All the delicious food was donated and we received many, many compliments.
We then prepared and served a roast turkey dinner for the Girl Guide Annual Meeting on June 12th making a profit of $400.28.
On October 14th and 21st we provided soup, sandwiches and dessert to one bus each day of seniors and a profit of $569.38 was made. Again we heard wonderful comments about the lunch.

St. Mark’s Sunday School & Christian Education Committee
As you read this we are busy preparing for the Advent Season, can you believe we’ve reached this time of year so quickly? Join us, Mr. Al Fougere and the Choir at our Hanging of the Greens Service on November 30th at 7p.m. as we decorate and prepare St. Mark’s for the Christmas season.
The Christian Education Committee continues to oversee the Sunday School program in the absence of a Superintendent. We have a very small registration this year, but are pleased to welcome Madeline and Thomas to our Sunday School table, we hope you are enjoying it as much as we are enjoying getting to know you both.
The One Room Sunday School continues to suit our needs as it is a curriculum for a variety of ages. The Christian Education Committee decided to send out letters of reminder to all families at St. Mark’s who had Sunday School aged children and encourage them to make Sunday School a part of their Sunday. Sunday School started off with a celebration and a time to get reacquainted after the summer. Cupcakes and juice helped to make the day a little sweeter. We are busy preparing the children for the Advent Season so they will realize Jesus is the reason for the Season!
The Christian Education Committee would like to thank Rev. LeGrow on a wonderful graduation service in June. The service was completely directed to the graduates and covered many topics they will have to deal with as they move on to the next stage of their lives. Thank You for making it a “Grads Service”!
Christian Education lost a dear friend in July, Jean MacKeigan was a dedicated former member of our committee for many years and always felt Christian Education was important in the lives of the youth of our Church, she will be missed.
Soon it will be the time of year when you might be asked to sit on a committee at St. Mark’s. We ask you to consider joining Christian Education, your ideas just might be the ones which will make a difference.

St. David’s Sunday School
An average of eight to ten children are attending Sunday school at St. David’s this fall according to superintendent, Lisa Rhynolds. She and the children are busy preparing for the White Gift Service which will be on December 14th this year. She needs at least one more teacher to help her since Paige is no longer here. Contact Lisa if you are willing to share in this important work in our congregation.

Members of St. David’s U.C.W. are saddened by the sudden passing of our president, Patsy Swain on November 2nd, 2008.
Soon after moving to Port Hastings in 1980, Patsy became an active member of St. David’s U.C.W. While chairing the Ways & Means Committee, she organized many suppers which were always very successful. She arranged for the food on other occasions and participated in our many U.C.W. projects.
Patsy was presented with her U.C.W. Life Membership pin in May 2004. She was nominated by our group to receive the Inverness County Volunteer Recognition Award in the spring of 2008.
We, as well as members of St. David’s congregation extend sincere sympathy to Patsy’s family. She will be greatly missed.

Choir Practice
There will be a choir practice on Tuesday at 5:50 p.m. at St. Mark's. We will be learning a new version of "In Flanders Fields" - music composed by Al to be sung during the Service of Remembrance on November 9th.

There will be short Congregational meeting immediately following the Service at St. Mark's on November 9th.
Ten Thousand Villages Sale –Another Huge Success
The St. Mark's Mission and Outreach Committee, again, hosted the Ten Thousand Villages Sale on Saturday, October 24th, 2008. The total sales figure for the day was $12,050.00 before taxes. This was a small increase over last year which had been $11,800.00 in sales. Our volunteer sale coordinators, John and Louise, visiting from Burlington, Ontario (although Louise grew up in Bras D'or, Cape Breton!), told us that the proceeds from $3,500 in sales would feed and provide for a family of four for one year. We were able to assist in the care of 3.4 families for the next year. That feels good to me!
"Many hands make light work". Thanks to Carol Ann who got a key to open the Church when she say our Ten Thousand Villages people had arrived a bit early. Thanks to all the men who helped unload the truck and the many volunteers who helped to unpack and set up the merchandise on the Friday evening. We had a few sales Friday evening to practise our skills on the computer and get us off to a great start! Special thanks to Jean Wilson who hosted John and Louise for the night. She has done this many times and we appreciate her opening her home this way. She picked them up and dropped them off and fed them supper on Friday night!
Saturday was a glorious sunny day - just right for lots of shoppers to come out and start their Christmas shopping. We were even more efficient with three checkouts - one for cash only and the others were connected to debit and credit card lines. Thus meant that we didn't have the massive lineups as in other years and made for a more relaxed shopping atmosphere and happier customers. Thanks to all the computer operators, the wrappers and cash/change makers. Thanks especially to Barb who came and made the debit and credit transactions so smooth!
Lunch was provided for the workers with yummy homemade chilli, rolls and chocolate chip cookies. The Beavers were in the Narthex providing a healthy snack as they held their Apple Day.
At 3:30 p.m. there were still people shopping and it was a very welcome sight to see FIVE men waiting to help us pack up! They were so efficient that at one point we had to get a box of packing material off the truck to finish up the last table of dishes. The floor was swept and all the goods were packed and on the truck by 5 p.m.- a record cleanup! Our Ten Thousand Villages team were very complimentary that we really knew what we were doing and very pleased about all aspects of the sale. Needless to say, so were we!
There were lots of people who helped to make the event a success and a fun couple of days! Most importantly, we all did a bit to help people in far away lands.

Choir Gowns
The choir has asked St. Mark's Congregational Board for new gowns and suggested that the funds for this purchase should come from the Memorial Fund. This requires a vote by the members of the of the congregation, which should take place soon. The choir would like to wear their new gowns for the Christmas service.

Calling All Graduates!
We are looking for photos of high school, college and university graduates from St. David's and St. Mark's to include in the Advent issue of the CONTACT. Please call Camille at 787-2610 and arrange for a pick-up of the photo or leave it with Jane during office hours. Post secondary graduates: please include the faculty, date of graduation and the institution's name. I prefer not to have photos emailed, I like to scan them myself so that I have the correct resolution for the picture. I'll get them back to you as soon as I scan them. Thanks

Covenanting Service at West Bay for Wayne Yorke
It was a celebration of a New Ministry at West Bay United Church on Sunday, October 19th. K.Wayne Yorke was presented to the West Bay Pastoral Charge during a service presided over by Rev. Donna Tourneur. Rev. Sheldon LeGrow delivered the message, Kay Horton played the organ and Ray Horton conducted the choir. There was a delicious lunch served in the hall after the service. We wish Wayne and his wife many happy years here in Cape Breton.
