Pastoral Letter from the General Council Executive-elect

GC43 Logo
Dear Friends,

Grace, mercy, and peace be with you in the name of Jesus, the head of the church.

We, the General Council Executive-elect, greet each of you during this time of change and transition in the church. Although our tenure in office does not officially begin until January 1, 2019, we met over the weekend of September 8‒10 to commence our work. During this time, we looked at what it means to function as an executive for the General Council. We were ably led in our discussions by Dan Hotchkiss, noted church governance consultant.

During our time together, we noted that as an executive we are called upon to offer leadership to the church as we live out our mission. It was clear to us that we will be called upon to deal with the denomination-shaping questions and policy. We look forward to working with the Moderator, General Secretary, and General Council Office staff to plan for the work of the next three years. We are conscious of the awesome responsibilities that have been laid on our shoulders, and from now we pledge to you to do our best with the things you have placed in our hands.

We were reminded that we are a conciliar and a connexional church. As connexional church we are connected to each other; each member is connected to the next, and each level of church governance is connected to the next, and all are connected to the whole church. We are aware that clear and effective communication will strengthen our connecting. To this end we pledge ourselves from now to keep the lines of communication open with you during our tenure in office.

January 1, 2019, will mark a change in our church. As we prepare for this change, we will also be involved in a time of transitioning from old ways of doing things to new ways. Much work must be done for us to be ready for the change. We place on record our thanks to the many who are busy creating new structures. Our thanks also to those who have the hard, and often painful, task of dismantling the structures of presbyteries and Conferences to make way for the January 1 change. This is an emotional time for us all, and yet we are conscious that amid the change, the work and mission of the church will continue after January 1, 2019. As we plan for the changes we know that we will continue to be The United Church of Canada, and there is still much work for us to do, even as we do our work differently. We therefore hold up before us all the mission of the church and remind ourselves that there is need for all of us to be part of it.

We hold in our prayers those who will be affected personally by the changes that are to occur. We ask your prayers for us as we prepare to assume the responsibilities of being the General Council Executive. Please remember in your prayers our Moderator Richard Bott, General Secretary Nora Sanders, and the staff of the General Council Office. We also ask your prayers for all who will be taking up new appointments in the new structures come January 1.

It has been said that the only constant in life is change. We move forward into the future not afraid of the challenges that change will cause. Instead we go forward with faith. We are reminded by the words of A New Creed that “In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone.” It is upon this that we anchor our faith. We have no idea what the details of our future will look like. But we invite each of us to hold the hands of each other as we work together toward the future.

With you we risk faith and dare to hope.

Yours in Christ,
Paul Douglas Walfall on behalf of the Executive-elect

Announcements         The Work of Church and Community

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Greeting
Let us pause to remember that in this region we live and work and worship on lands that are, by law, the unceded territories of the Wabanaki peoples—predominantly the lands of the Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, and Passamaquoddy. May we live with respect on this land, and live in peace and friendship with its people.

One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.

*Introit      Called by Earth and Sky, refrain only MV 135

In the name of the Creator, who colours the sky, the name of Christ, who died under dark skies, and the name of the Spirit, the wind in the sky. Amen.
Holy! Holy! Holy! Earth is filled with God’s presence.

Call to Worship
We invite the skies to worship with us:
the subtle orange skies at dawn
and the bold red skies at sunset.
We join the heavens in praising God:
proclaiming God’s glory across the globe
and hailing God’s name with the evening stars.
We join with the atmosphere in worship:
the air, the moisture, the oxygen, the wind,
and all the expressions of God’s Spirit.
We call the clouds to celebrate with storms:
to carry the life-giving drops of rain,
that give hope and healing to Earth.
We invite the winds to join our petitions:
to carry our prayers to God above
and to breathe our hopes to Christ in person.
We celebrate the song of the skies!
Sing! Skies! Sing!
We invite you to name sky creatures to join us in worship.
We name, silently or aloud, other creatures or parts of the sky or atmosphere and we invite them to join us in praising our Creator.
We celebrate the song of the skies!
Sing! Skies! Sing!

*Hymn      Called by Earth and Sky MV 135

Prayer for Healing  A Remembering
A leaf, cone, seed or some other symbol of remembrance may be given to the people as a reminder of our connection with creation.
As we hold this symbol in our hands we remember times when we have been amazed by the sky, both at night and in daylight.
O God, we thank you for the wonders of the heavens and the splendour of the skies. We remember and confess how we have polluted our skies with toxins. Christ, who ascended into a cloud, hear our cry. Amen.

Assurance of Love
Christ hears your confession and forgives your sins against the atmosphere,
Christ, teach us to love the skies that surround and sustain our planet.
I invite you to come home to Earth by rejoicing under her skies. Shalom! Shalom! We are coming home!

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Jeremiah 4:23-28 ‘When the heavens mourn.’
This is the witness of the Hebrew people. All: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 19 ‘The heavens declare the glory of God.’ VU 740

*Hymn    Help Us Accept Each Other Printed

Opening the Word and the Lord's Prayer

Gospel Acclamation

Mark 15:33-39Jesus hangs on the cross, the sky turns black in sympathy.
This is Good News! All: Thanks be to God.

Reflection in Song Song of Sky
1. Lord of suns and star exploding
Galaxies and swirling skies,
Where you chose to show your glory
Took the heavens by surprise.
Lord of solar winds and wisdom,
Super stars that blow our mind,
Choosing such a fragile planet
Hardly seems a grand design.

2. On this piece of stardust swirling,
On this spinning spot in space,
Life itself was born like music,
When you showed your hidden face.
What an honour to be chosen,
Silent planet blue and green,
Filled with glory, grace and gardens,
Where the breath of God is seen.

3. What is even more amazing
We have poisoned Earth like fools.
Help us change our way of living,
Love the Earth and love her rules.
Help us stem the tide of traders
Leaving Earth an empty store;
Join us now Creator Spirit,
Come renew your Earth once more.
Words: © Norman Habel 1999 Melody: Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken

WE RESPOND IN FAITH

* Hymn  Circle of God (Each Blade of Grass)    MV 37

Minute for Mission & Offering Our Gifts to God

*Offering Song (Tune: Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow)
Your love, O God, to all you show. We, gathered here, commit to grow. We offer You these gifts, that we, may celebrate diversity.

Prayers of the People
Prayers are offered, concluding with:
Jesus Christ, teach us to empathize with Earth. Make our spirits sensitive to the cries of creation, cries for justice from the air, the clouds, and the sky.
Jesus Christ, make our faith sensitive to the groans of the Spirit in creation, groans of longing for a new creation.
Jesus Christ, make our hearts sensitive to the songs of our kin, songs of celebration from the stars, the rains, and the light.
Christ, teach us to care. Amen

WE GO TO SERVE GOD

*Hymn    Help Us Accept Each Other Printed

*Commissioning and Blessing
May the Spirit of God, who is above all and in all and through all, fill us with the knowledge of God’s presence in Earth
and with the pulsing of Christ in creation, through whom all things are reconciled and renewed.
Go in peace, serving Christ and loving Earth!
We go in peace, serving Christ and loving Earth

*Choral Amen

Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!

Call to Worship
Peoples from every corner of creation
Celebrate with all creatures on Earth!
Young and old across the planet,
Rejoice in the day that God has made!
Indigenous peoples of every land,
Help us sense the spirit deep in each land!

Celebrate with us the richness of creation!
Peoples of every orientation and ability,
Celebrate the diversity of creation!
All humanity on Planet Earth,
Praise God for our planet home.
Sing, peoples, sing! Sing, creation, sing!

Prayer for Wholeness
Jesus said, “I came not to be served but to be a servant.” We know this is an example we are called to follow and yet we so often find it difficult. We want to be served; we want to be important; we want to have our needs met. Forgive us, loving God. Stretch us. Open our hearts to experience and celebrate the true joy that comes from serving others. Draw out from us a desire to be a part of a serving community, where each of us shares a concern for the needs of each other, and none are forgotten. Amen.

Assurance of Love
One: God has made us – all of us. And God loves us – all of us – as if we were God’s favourite. So be assured that, as you seek to realign your hearts with God’s, you are forgiven, and loved unconditionally.
All: Thanks be to God. Amen.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Genesis 1:26-28   Let us make human beings in our image.
One: What are human beings that you think about them?
All: What are human beings that you pay attention to them?
God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image,
make them reflecting our nature
So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds
in the air, the cattle,
And yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves
on the face of Earth.”
God created human beings; he created them godlike
Reflecting God’s nature.
He created them male and female.
God blessed them:
“Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!
Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air,
for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.”

*Introit  O Beautiful Gaia MV 41

In the name of God, who creates planets, the name of Christ, born on planet Earth, and the name of the Spirit, who envelopes our planet. Amen.
Holy! Holy! Holy! Earth is filled with God’s presence.

Call to Worship
Planet Earth, spinning silently through space:
Celebrate your beauty and your grace,
your special place in our solar system,
Planet Earth, gleaming green and blue:
Rejoice in your ocean currents,
as they dance and swirl with hope.
Planet Earth, pulsing with life:
Join in praise with all your fauna and flora
as they sing their songs to the Lord.
Planet Earth, enveloped in the breath of God:
Bless all your creatures this day
with the life-giving breath of God.
Planet Earth, our precious, fragile home:
Celebrate, with all your children,
God’s presence in our planet home,
We celebrate the song of our planet!
Sing, planet Earth, sing!
The names of other creatures or areas of the planet may be added by members of the congregation.
We celebrate the song of the planet!
Sing, planet Earth, sing!

*Hymn     This Is God's Wondrous World VU 296

Prayer for Healing A Remembering
A small piece of sage, basil, other herb or some other symbol of remembrance is given to each person as a reminder of our past connection with creation.
As we rub this symbol in our hands we remember our wonder when we first saw Earth as a green-blue planet spinning in space.
O God, we thank you for our planet home.
We remember and confess how we have violated and polluted our garden planet.
Christ, born on planet Earth, hear our cry.

Assurance of Love
Christ hears your confession and forgives your sins against the planet.
Christ, teach us to love Earth as our home and the planet as a precious sanctuary.
I invite you to celebrate Earth as your home and to revere this planet as God’s sanctuary.
Shalom! Shalom! Earth is our home!

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Genesis 1:1–25  And God saw that it was good.
This is the witness of the Hebrew people. All: Thanks be to God.

Jesus Christ, teach us to be at one with Earth. Make our spirits sensitive to the cries of creation, cries for justice from the seas, the skies, and the land.
Jesus Christ, make our souls sensitive to the songs of our kin, songs of celebration from the sea, the land, and the air. Christ, teach us to care for our planet home. Amen.

WE GO TO SERVE GOD
