Office of Vocation
If the 43rd General Council passes Remit 3: Office of Vocation in July 2018, the Office of Vocation will become part of the United Church structure, not a separate entity. The Office will become part of the General Council (the Denominational Council, if Remit 1 is passed) and will be responsible for the oversight and discipline of ministry personnel as well as for entrance to ministry.
The Office of Vocation’s structure and responsibilities are contained in motion CR 6 adopted at the 42nd General Council 2015 (GC42 Record of Proceedings 2015, pp. 146‒147):
That the 42nd General Council establish a
denominational office of vocation as a permanent feature of the
denominational structure…
Structure:
The office of vocations will be overseen by an elected body honouring and living into intercultural mission and ministry…
Structure:
The office of vocations will be overseen by an elected body honouring and living into intercultural mission and ministry…
If the Office of Vocation is part of the United Church, it must have accountability within the United Church. The motion provides that the Office will be overseen by an elected body, the Board of Vocation. The Board will be appointed by the General Council and will be accountable to the General Council for the work of the Office of Vocation.
More information about the Office of Vocation will be shared as it becomes available, including via a YouTube Live session in early May. Details on how to participate will be posted in this e-newsletter and at United-in-Learning.com.
