The Season after Pentecost-Creation Time 3
September 24th 2017-Wilderness Sunday

‘Let the wilderness lift up its voice.’ Isaiah 42:11

Thoughts around which to gather as we worship: We’ve all experienced wilderness in our lives. Either a literal image, an experience in a physical place, or a spiritual experience where we feel separated from God. In Romans, Paul points to the Holy Spirit as our connection with God when we are in these wilderness places. The challenge for us today is to find union with God in both physical and spiritual experiences of wilderness – by caring for creation and caring for our spiritual lives. How might we let the wilderness renew us and deepen our connection with God?

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Greeting

One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.

*Introit Know That God Is Good   MV 104

Call to Worship

One: In wilderness and wild places, in groans and breath, in lonely spaces, in birth and rebirth, in fire and flame, in pain and joy, beyond familiar traces, encounter the Holy.
All: We gather in this place, separated from our usual spaces, to wonder, laugh, and maybe even cry, to discover and to hope, to meet God here among us.

Opening Prayer

Do we dare?
Dare we venture into the wild places?
Wilderness spaces – frozen tundra, windswept outback, tangled bush, jagged mountain ranges, fathomless seas – so much beauty, so much danger, so much uncertainty.
Dare we find God present?
In painful distress, disappointed hopes, and almost abandoned dreams, listen for the deep and anguished sighs and groans.
Yes, God, you are here! Amen.

*Hymn   Come, Let Us Sing           VU 222

Prayer for Wholeness

Response: One: Hear our prayers…
All : God as mourner and midwife,
breathe with us in mercy and care.

Words of Affirmation

One: When we call to God in our distress,
when we cry in our anguish and hurt,
the Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.
All : We have the first fruits of the Spirit within us,
renewing the whole creation. Thanks be!

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Joel 1:8–10, 17–20 Even the wild beasts cry to thee.

One: This is the witness of the Hebrew people. All: Thanks be to God

Psalm 65:5-13  The pastures of the wilderness overflow

*Hymn Spirit of Gentleness        VU 375

Opening the Word & The Lord’s Prayer

Romans 8:18-27 The whole creation waits with eager longing

One: This is the witness of the early church. All: Thanks be to God.

Opening the Word 2

WE RESPOND IN FAITH

* Hymn     It’s a Song of Praise to the Maker MV 30

Minute for Mission & Offering Our Gifts to God

*Offering Prayer

God, our Creator, through your love you have given us these gifts to share. Accept our offerings as an expression of our deep thanks and as signs of concern for those in need, including our fellow creatures on planet Earth. Amen.

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

WE GO TO SERVE GOD

* Hymn You Shall Go Out with Joy           VU 884

*Commissioning and Blessing

In every gift of God there is a test of self-discovery,
a promise of life.

And may the blessing of God who searches the heart
lead you into the freedom of God’s whole creation,
today and every day.

*Choral Amen

One: From many different lands we gather
on this land, in this place, at this time.
All: You are with us,
God of the earth, the land, the sky.
One: In difficult times,
in difficult places,
in strange and unknown lands
people gather to worship God in spirit and truth
All: and God is always here...always near...
watching...waiting...
listening...breathing...
in spirit and in truth.

Opening Prayer

In holy presence we gather: We come with the land…
We lift our voice with the voice of the land:
seeking from God what makes for life,
crying out for the violence that has been done,
longing and working for creation’s redemption.
We listen with the land for vibrations of God’s presence,
grounding all in the deep assurance
that God is and will be in this place. Amen.

*Hymn   Praise the Lord with the Sound of Trumpet   VU245

Prayer for Wholeness

Assurance of Forgiveness
One: Even where the consequences for wrong are almost beyond enduring, the psalmist reminds us that there is no one and nowhere outside or beyond the reach of God’s care.
All: God’s loving grace is abundant. God’s gift of forgiveness opens the way for transformation and life. Thanks be to God, for the possibility of love.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Genesis 3:14–19; 4:8–16 Earth bears the curse for us
One: This is the witness of the Hebrew people. All: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 139   How deep your designs are to me parts 1 & 2, VU861

*Hymn This Is God's Wondrous World   VU296

Opening the Word & The Lord’s Prayer

Gospel Acclamation

Matthew 5:1-12  Blessed are the meek; they shall inherit the earth

One: This is the witness of the early church. All: Thanks be to God.

Opening the Word 2

WE RESPOND IN FAITH

* Hymn     Touch the Earth Lightly VU307

Minute for Mission & Offering Our Gifts to God

*Offering Prayer
God of abundance,
We offer these gifts in gratitude:
gratitude for your watchful presence,
gratitude for your constant support,
gratitude for your gentle prodding,
and gratitude for your love without condition
and acceptance without limit.
May we always have thankful hearts and giving hands.
Amen!

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession    Response: One: Hear our prayers.  All: Hear our prayers, O God...

WE GO TO SERVE GOD

* Hymn Let All Things Now Living   VU242

*Commissioning and Blessing

Go from this place into the land beloved of God.
Tread lightly on the land that your footprints may not harm.
Touch gently with your hands that healing may bring hope.
Tremble softly in anticipation of the Spirit’s presence,
transforming life with love in every time and place.

*Choral Amen

St. Mark's "Sticker-ocracy"

St. Mark's "Sticker-ocracy"

St. Mark's Board will be meeting this week. A chart re this congregation's past and present realities has been in the church entry over the summer. As well, the congregation has been invited to add to the list of possible future scenarios for St. Mark's that were generated at the June Board meeting.

At worship on Sunday September 17th, you will be given 3 stickers as you arrive. In the lobby you will find flipchart paper with options for movement into the future. As a way of your Board getting a feel for how the congregation would like to proceed, we invite you to place your stickers beside your preferred option or options (ie. you can place all 3 stickers with one suggestion you really like or divide them up as to top choices). Sticker-ocracy at work!

Living the mini-Season of Creation in the Season after Pentecost

Finding God in Creatio

Whether through personal experience or images from TV or movies, we can all imagine the different parts of creation that are the focus for this season. We know the vistas, and the plants and animals, even the people, that live in forests, wilderness/outback regions, along rivers, and in the different landscapes that cover the earth.

During this Season of Creation we hear the story of creation through the voices of Paul, David, and John of Patmos, and called to even greater awareness of all parts of creation. We might call these writers advocates and allies for creation. We are challenged to hear in their words the call to also be advocates in today’s world.

Paul, David, and John invite us to encounter God in creation, and bring messages of God’s love and presence with us. David talks of an “inescapable God” who is everywhere, and ready for a relationship with us (Psalm 139:7–12). In Romans 8:18–27, Paul reminds us of the groaning pains of creation. This is a message familiar to us today as we grapple with the human effects of taking advantage and doing harm to creation. Paul’s address to the people in Athens (Acts 17:22–28) is intended to evangelize, and so too can our work to care for creation, alongside people of different faiths and perhaps no faith, be a witness to our faith. John’s vision of the river of life in Revelation 22:1–5 invites us to find hope, promise, and renewal in a river that connects all nations to God. Guided by God through the Holy Spirit, we can nurture and care for all creation, and be leaves of healing for all nations. When we work to bring renewed life and peace where there is neglect and violence against creation, we will find God there.

The Season of Creation is celebrated during the first four Sundays of September leading up to the feast of St. Francis of Assisi October 4. St. Francis honoured and respected creation through the way that he lived and is a model for each one of us today. Sundays this year are Forest, Land, Wilderness/Outback, and River.
