As we gather today to worship, let us pause to remember that in this region we live and work and worship on lands that are, by law, the unceded territories of the Wabanaki peoples—predominantly the lands of the Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, and Passamaquoddy. May we live with respect on this land, and live in peace and friendship with its people.

Announcements The Work of Church and Community

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Greeting:
This is the day the Lord has made:
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Call to Worship

We have been created in the image of God.
We are created to love our brothers and sisters, all children of God.
Christ has taught us how to love one another
And we are called to share that love with the world.
The Holy Spirit moves in us, giving us gifts to do God’s work.
The Spirit moves us like the wind in the trees.
We go where God is leading us.
Follow Jesus, and the Spirit will show us the way.
We have gathered to worship God.
We have come seeking comfort,
inspiration, community, and insight.
We have come to open ourselves
to the power of God’s presence in our midst.
We have come to offer up the seasons
and the turnings in our lives,
and to ask God’s help in our learning and in our growing.

As we gather for worship we turn to those next to us and share the peace of Christ.
One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.

Opening Prayer

Wondrous God:
you touch our lives with healing and with justice;
new life is your gift.
We praise you for the Good News
which is ours through Jesus Christ.
May this time of worship nourish us
with your promise of meaning and purpose.
May we be empowered to carry your goodness
into the coming week.
We pray in Jesus’ name, our Source and Saviour.

Hymn Holy Spirit, Hear Us VU 377

Prayer of Confession
Come Holy Spirit  and fill us.
Come, Holy Breath  and live in us
Come, Holy Wind   and move through us
Where we are guided by prejudice,  fill us with love.
Where we are guided by pessimism,  fill us with joy
Where we are guided by misunderstanding  fill us with peace
Where we are guided by superficial quick fixes,  fill us with patience.
Where we are guided by self interest,  fill us with kindness.
Where we are guided by apathy, fill us with goodness.
Where we are guided by convenience, fill us with faithfulness.
Where we are guided by complacency, fill us with meekness.
Where we are guided by temptation, fill us with self control.
Come Holy Spirit, fill us
Come Holy Breath, live in us.
Come Holy Wind, move through us. Amen.

Call to Worship

We gather today for worship marking the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.
As we gather, we recognize that a history of a people is not all glory.
The history of Canada has both joy and sorrow, both triumph and tragedy.
We have much to celebrate, much to lament,
and much to dream.
Come, let us gather in the presence of God, our Creator.
Come, let us worship the Creator in whom we,
and all of creation, are one.
Come, let us open our hearts in thanksgiving.
Come, let us be filled with the Spirit’s vision as we worship today.

Acknowledgement of the Territory

Opening Prayer

O God of shepherd, warrior, and prophet;
Creator of  First Peoples, pioneer, and
saddlebag preacher;
Light of immigrant, loyalist, and seeker:
we live with history and we love your presence in it.
We trace our roots to your creative powers.
We embrace one another as children of your Spirit.
As we celebrate our history today, help us remember all of it:
that which makes us proud
and that which makes us ashamed;
that which reveals our closeness to your Word
and that which reveals our distance.
Remind us of your constant presence:
forgiving, restoring, recreating, and making all things new.
Hear us, Redeemer God, as we dwell for a moment in your goodness. Amen.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

Prayer of Illumination

We have heard the words of scripture so often
that we assume we know what they mean.
We fail to notice the cultural lenses
through which we view the stories,
the assumptions we make based on what we have been taught.
Today, may we receive these words afresh, Loving God.
May we notice what we have not noticed before,
by the power of your Spirit working through these words. Amen.
