SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE, ST. MARK'S, NOVEMBER 10TH, 2013

Bill Charlton, Chaplain, RCL, Branch 43

REMEMBRANCE  DAY, 2013

 Looking back to the WWII years again. In November 1943 and towards the end of that year, the fate of Hitler's One Thousand Year Reich was now appearing less secure.

The Russians had defeated the Nazi armies at Stalingrad, Kursk and Kiev. At Leningrad the same fate awaited the Nazi oppressers. The Soviets had held the first war crimes trial and three German officers were executed for atrocities committed against the Russian people. Herr Hitler now was looking at the Soviet juggernaut moving towards inroads into Europe and his doom.

Penicillin now in use for the first time is saving many soldier's lives in North Africa.  Deaths from septic wounds were now greatly reduced and thousands of lives were saved.

Canada's most unusual battle front, the Aleutian islands, where the First Special Service Force was engaged in the action to drive the Japanese from the islands was over by November. It comprised two American battalions and one Canadian (not the lads from Cape Breton - these fellows were from the Canadian Fusiliers and Winnipeg Riles). The Japanese had withdrawn at the end of the action.

On the home front food remained scarce and shortages became just as acute with whale and horsemeat becoming viable substitutes for the more usual meats.

Performers were still entertaining the troops, now building up in massive numbers in Britain. Bing Crosby's White Christmas was heard for the first time across the land.

Back to 2013.
Across Canada today we are having big Marches of Concern for our veterans still dependant on the Veteran Affairs offices. The present government is planning closure of these essential service administration outlets. This eventuality will leave seriously disabled vets without aid which will greatly impact their future welfare. It is our duty to give voice against this extremely cruel attitude to those disadvantaged VETERANS.

Lest We Forget

Greeting one another with the Peace of Christ

One: Blessed are those who make peace;
they shall be called sons and daughters of God. Matthew 5:9
All: We meet in the name of Christ and share his peace.
One: The peace of Christ be with you. All: And with your spirit.

* Introit All Are Welcome, verse 4
Let us build a house where hands will reach
beyond the wood and stone
to heal and strengthen, serve and teach,
and live the Word they've known.
Here the outcast and the stranger
bear the image of God's face;
let us bring an end to fear and danger:
Refrain
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

*Call to Worship
The measure of a people’s heart is this:
do we remember the sacrifices of the past;
do we work for peace in the present;
do we speak of hope for the future?
And so we come now before God
to name as our dream God’s reign of shalom,
to commit ourselves to the cause of peace,
and to remember. Let us worship God.

Written by Rod Sykes, St. Andrew’s U.C., Calgary, Alta  Gathering, Summer/Autumn 2010, page 49. Used with permission.

Opening Prayer
Loving God, on this day before Remembrance Day we recognize the double-edged nature of our remembering. We acknowledge and lament the ultimate evil of war and our society's part in adding to the violence of our world. Yet we remember, with very real gratitude, those who have sacrificed their health and their lives to resist evil. They struggled as best they could on behalf of freedom and justice in the face of terrible tyranny.
Be with us, God, in our remembering. Strengthen us all to resist evil and to work for peace with the same commitment and self-sacrifice as those whom we honour in this week of Remembrance. Amen.
* Hymn           God As with Silent Hearts           VU 527
Prayer for Wholeness
One: Forgive us O God...
All: ...and give us your peace.
Assurance
Hear the vision of the prophets: “and they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war anymore.”
Trust the God who longs for peace.
We are forgiven, strengthened, empowered
to be peacemakers in our world. Thanks be to God. Amen.

WE LISTEN FOR GOD’S WORD

In today's reading, the word of God is spoken by the prophet Haggai to the governor and the high priest and the remnant of the people.
Haggai 2:3-9      God will shake things up; there will be new splendour.
This is the witness of the Hebrew people. All: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 98      Sing a new song to God. (refrain 2)      VU 818
Hymn       Make Me a Channel of Your Peace       VU 684
Opening the Word and the Lord's Prayer
The Gospel Acclamation
Luke 1:76-79      …to guide our feet into the way of peace.
This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

WE RESPOND IN FAITH

Minute for Mission
Offering Our Gifts to God
*Offering Prayer
May these gifts be multiplied as we conceive of God’s abundant love and give birth to the ways of peace, love and justice in our world. Amen.
Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession
One: Hear our prayer...
All: Be with us, God, in this time of remembering.

WE GO TO SERVE GOD

* Hymn       Let There Be Peace on Earth       Printed
* Commissioning and Benediction
One: Let us go in peace to love and serve God.
All: We rejoice in the power of the Spirit,
and go to serve God with heart and soul and strength.
One: Let us go knowing that the blessing of God,
Creator, Christ and Spirit, is with us this day and always.

* Choral Amen
