Thoughts around which to gather as we worship:

The power of greatness can be seductive. It can lure us towards self-importance and cloud our sense of who and what matters most. It can cause us to seek after answers to the wrong questions in life. This week’s readings explore the difference between what passes for greatness and what is truly great. Read together, they are clear: God is great and so are we – when we humbly offer our lives in service.

Weekly Reflection for October 11th, Thanksgiving

October 11

Mark 10:27b

[Jesus said] “for God all things are possible.”

We can all be challenged by trying to live the deep realities
of our faith commitment each day. Like the man who asks
Jesus how to inherit eternal life, we too want to know how
to be in God’s favour. Yet, like him, we can turn away when
we are challenged to give away those things we value. The
things we are asked to give up differ greatly from the days
of the disciples, but God’s call is still the same: we need to
be willing to let go of all that gets in the way, that we can
truly be followers of Jesus.

50^th Anniversary! In 2016, St. Mark’s will be celebrating their 50^th Anniversary. 50^thAnniversary weekend will be June 10^th to 12^th, 2016. Next meeting of Anniversary Planning Committee is October 26^th at 1:30 in St. Mark’s parlour.

Ten Thousand Villages is a project of Mennonite Central Committee, the outreach arm of the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in North America. October 11^th, 2015-Creation Time: Thanksgiving Sunday

Thoughts around which to gather as we worship:

In the dark green field stands a solemn farm couple, their heads bowed. A church can be seen in the distance. The man holds his hat and the woman clasps her hands in prayer. A pitchfork is stuck in the earth nearby, while a half-full basket of vegetables sits on the ground between them. The painting is that of the 19th century French painter Jean Francois Millet, the son of a peasant farmer. Entitled “The Angelus,” it illustrates an ancient custom of thanksgiving in the midst of daily life. In 19th century France, church bells rang 3 times each day. When they heard the bells, people would stop whatever they were doing to give God thanks. This Thanksgiving, our lectionary readings – from Joel to Matthew – remind us to use every moment of our lives, no matter how busy we are, to give thanks to our Creator.

Weekly Reflection for October 4th, Worldwide Communion

Mark 10:15

[Jesus said], “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.”

Sometimes we get caught up with petty details, and we miss the larger picture of things. Some Pharisees question Jesus about divorce and cite ancient laws that were biased against women. Jesus makes the broader statement that we must not try to break apart what God has joined. However, he goes further when people bring children to him. Jesus challenges those who want to keep the children away. “The reign of God belongs to them,” Jesus says. In the midst of wondering about details we must not lose sight of compassion and caring for one another.
