Help for the Hearing Impaired at St. Mark's

There is now a loop system in St. Mark's Church so anyone with a modern hearing aid can receive a radio signal directly from the the audio system. This greatly improves the quality of the sound because it eliminates the background noise one gets when receiving the sound by way of the speakers. For best reception, one should sit within about ten feet (three meters) of the sidewall or the back of the sanctuary. One person, who attends faithfully, said it was the first time she had heard the whole service in three years.

If you have any questions, ask Andy Palmer. Some hearing aids have to be switched manually to RF mode.

Refugee Family Update

We are very pleased to pass along the Kalley's news. As you know, Donald was accepted into the post graduate course in Marine Geomatics that begins this September at the NSCC Campus in Lawrencetown. It looked for awhile like Donald would be staying in a bachelor apartment in Lawrencetown and Christiana and the children would stay with friends in Halifax until Donald's course was finished in May. The committee did not feel it was very satisfactory to break up the family, so have been looking for another solution. A semi-detached house with 2 bedrooms recently came up for rent in Lawrencetown - just a 20 minute walk from the college. On Thursday, July 5th, Hermina Van Zutphen packed the Kalley family into her truck and drove them to Lawrencetown to view the property. What a surprise to discover that the landlord is one of Donald's instructors at the college! They decided to take it and put a damage deposit to hold it. Even though the present tenant will be moving out at the end of July, the landlord did not charge them rent for the month of August. The house is on the bus route, so Christiana will have a lot more freedom to get about. Also, the rent includes heat and electricity, so they may even be paying less than they are now paying in Port Hood.

The one item their furnished house is lacking is a double bed. If anyone has one to spare, the Kalleys would be very grateful to have it. Please call 787-2610 if you would like to donate the bed. They will be moving their belongings to Lawrencetown in late August.

Also, a very generous lady in Port Hood, Michelle Campbell was buying a new vehicle so she gave them her 1998 Caravan - with all repairs up to date. Donald is thrilled to have a set of wheels and to be independent!

Another bit of great news: Donald started working at a new quarry on the Mulgrave side of the Strait on Friday, July 6th. Having the van is a real asset for this job - the company is even paying his mileage. His pay is considerably more than minimum wage, so this should help their financial situation.

We wish them continued blessings in their first year living in Canada.

The Pelley's last Sunday at St. Mark's, June 24th

It was a sad Sunday to realize that the Pelleys were on their way out of our lives at St. Mark's in Port Hawkesbury. There were many tears all around. We wish them a very happy retirement in their new home. They have already taken reservations for those wanting to visit with them!
